My 10 Favorite Passages from Uncle Tom’s Cabin

Having just finished Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, a book published in 1852, and said to have laid the groundwork for The Civil War, I find it necessary to transcribe some of the passages I underlined from the book into my blog so as to memorialize some of the lessons I learned. This classic book, a story of love, hate, faith, and redemption speaks to the soul. If you have been so unfortunate as to have spent a lifetime without this story wrapped about your heart, I suggest you wait no longer. This is one of those books that will profoundly change your existence. Here are my 10 favorite quotes from Uncle Tom’s Cabin:

“Perhaps it is impossible for a person who does no good not to do harm.”

“Any mind that is capable of a real sorrow is capable of good.”

“If ever you have had a romantic, uncalculating friendship, – a boundless worship and belief in some hero of your soul, – if ever you have so loved, that all cold prudence, all selfish worldly considerations have gone down like drift-wood before a river flooded with new rain from heaven, so that you even forgot yourself, and were ready to cast your whole being into the chasm of existence, as an offering before the feet of another, and all for nothing, – if you awoke bitterly betrayed and deceived, still give thanks to God that you have had one glimpse of heaven. The door now shut will open again. Rejoice that the noblest capability of your eternal inheritance has been made known to you; treasure it, as the highest honor of your being, that ever you could so feel, -that so divine a guest ever possessed your soul.”

“Of course, in a novel, people’s hearts break, and they die, and that is the end of it; and in a story this is very convenient. But in real life we do not die when all that makes life bright dies to us. There is a most busy and important round of eating, drinking, dressing, walking, visiting, buying, selling, talking, reading, and all that makes up what is commonly called living, yet to be gone through…”

“She was one of those busy creatures, that can be no more contained in one place than a sunbeam or a summer breeze.”

“Tom opened his eyes, and looked upon his master. “Ye poor miserable critter!” he said, “there ain’t no more ye can do! I forgive ye, with all my soul!” and he fainted entirely away.”

“No one is so thoroughly superstitious as the godless man”

“But I want it done now, ” said Miss Ophelia.
What’s your hurry?”
Because now is the only time there ever is to do a thing in,” said Miss Ophelia.”

Tom looked up to his master, and answered, “Mas’r, if you was sick, or in trouble, or dying, and I could save ye, I’d give ye my heart’s blood; and, if taking every drop of blood in this poor old body would save your precious soul, I’d give ’em freely, as the Lord gave his for me. O, Mas’r! don’t bring this great sin on your soul! It will hurt you more than ‘t will me! Do the worst you can, my troubles’ll be over soon; but, if ye don’t repent, yours won’t never end!”

“I am braver than I was because I have lost all; and he who has nothing to lose can afford all risks.”

Bend, Not Break

This book is so good that I felt compelled to blog about it.  This book is for anyone who has had what seems like insurmountable obstacles placed in front of them, yet persevered.  It is a book about finding your inner strength.

Below are a few of my favorite passages from the book as these alone will motivate most to read the entire book.

“It gave me comfort to call to mind the Taoist teaching Shanghai Papa had asked me to memorize years earlier about the three friends of winter.  The image of the pine tree, evergreen in winter and always standing straight, reminded me to be strong.  The plum tree was my favorite.  I loved to see its crimson red blossoms lying bright against the crisp white snow the morning after a storm.  One winter day, watching me marvel at the delicate flowers in our scholar garden, Papa said, ‘This is what courage looks like: to blossom when none others dare because they could easily die from the cold.  Courage is the heart refusing to fear.’  I hadn’t really nderstood his words then, but I did now.  Then there was bamboo, the most popular plant in the region where I grew up.  Shanghai Papa had said that I must be like bamboo, bending from the prevailing wind, but never breaking.  Perhaps he had predicted then that something terrible would happen to me, and had had the foresight to instill in me the values that I would need to overcome atrocities.”

Ping Fu was torn away from her loving adopted family at eight years old during the Cultural Revolution in China.  She was forced to live in a dormitory which became home to what were called “the black elements” those that were downcast during the revolution.  At eight years old Ping Fu became the sole supporter and provider of her four year old sister Hong.  Ping and her sister, and millions of others in China lived in desperate poverty for years, eating rationed moldy rice.  Ping was humiliated, raped, and stepped on throughout her childhood.  Education and reading was forbidden.  Ping Fu’s story is jaw-dropping.  She is eventually exiled from her country and comes to the United States.  Miraculously she makes her way through college, has a child, and builds an amazing empire called Geomagic – a company that is the leader in 3D imaging technology.

Bend, Not Break is one of those rare books that I just could not put down.  Below are additional quotes that resonated with me…

“Feeling nauseated and disappointed in myself, I walked in Xixi’s room and watched as she slept.  I had given birth to her.  My responsibility to her was unconditional and I was fully committed.  Yes, while I had given birth to Geomagic as well, I had abandoned it in a moment of insecurity.  I felt that my integrity was being tested.  I was not a quitter.  Now I must take responsibility for Geomagic as I would for my daughter.”

Ping was eventually named Entrepreneur of the Year by Inc. Magazine.  However, the entrepreneurial road has never been easy.  She is candid throughout the book about her struggles and her triumphs.

“As I dealt with various employee issues during those dark hours, I kept reminding myself: it’s all about love.  Blaming others, being fearful and angry, acting vengefully, building resentment, destroying trust – these negative responses to trying situations suck us into a downward spiral and sap our energy, like water spinning down a drain.  The only way to triumph in business and in life is to love what we do, and love our customers, our colleagues, our investors, and our community.  Love even the people who drive us crazy, those who undermine us, and those who fail us, offering them compassion and forgiveness.”

“With my classmates, we discussed how there are two kinds of people.  A ‘sunrise person’ goes through life open to the idea that the best may still be coming.  A ‘sunset person’ on the other hand, believes that the present is always sloping downhill.  We reassured each other that we would be sunrise people and prevent the past from contaminating our future.”

There was so many amazing entrepreneurial nuggets in the book that I can’t do any justice in just one post.  Do yourself a service and get this book….it will change your perspective, which is the first step toward changing your life.

I Have News for You – YOU Are a Hoarder

“The insight I had as a child, even though I didn’t  know how significant it was at the time, was the beginning of my understanding as to why it is that we suffer.  It became very clear that one of the primary reasons we suffer is because we believe what we think, that the thoughts in our heads come uninvited into our consciousness, swirl around, and we attach to them.  We identify with them and grab hold of them.”

“One of the greatest reasons we suffer is because we believe the thoughts in our heads.”

“Why is it that we do this?  Why do we believe the thoughts in our head?  We don’t believe the thoughts in someone else’s head, when they speak them to us.  When we read a book – which is nothing but the recording of somebody else’s thoughts – we can take them or leave them.  But why is it that we are so prone to grasp at the thoughts that occur within our own mind – to hold onto them and become identified with them? We don’t seem to be able to put them down even when they cause great pain and suffering.”

These excerpts are from Adyashanti’s book Falling Into Grace – Insights on the End of Suffering.

Recently I went through a major brand change at my firm.  The hardest part of the brand change was that there was a small group of people that left my company because they didn’t want to be part of the new brand.  This group of people was like family to me.  They were part of my wedding just a couple months before the changes at the office.  We ate lunch together, celebrated holidays together, laughed as one, and cried as one.  We were as solid a group as there could be.  When some left my company after the change, it was no surprise, but this small group whom I considered family, they tore my heart out as they left one by one, leaving me when I needed them most.

For the first weeks and even months after the change I vilified these so called friends in my own mind.  It eased the suffering I was feeling.  Then a co-worker gave me this book, Falling Into Grace.  What I learned is that there was no reason to continue feeling the pain.  The pain and suffering I was feeling had nothing to do with those friends that left me, but rather the story I was repeating in my own head about why they left.  Why did I believe the story in my own head, especially when its only purpose was to cause suffering.  My own thoughts were preventing me from experiencing my own greatness…from building the empire I was seeking to build….from helping millions of people go after their dreams of owning a home…of building a real estate business… of achieving their own personal greatness.  The people that left my firm were not holding me back.  I was holding me back.

As I was flipping through television shows this weekend I came across a show called Hoarders.  This show was about a woman who had collected so much stuff in her house that she could no longer safely live in her own home.  Decades worth of junk had piled up around her to the point that rats were infesting her home and she didn’t even know it.  As I watched this poor woman deal with her fear of letting go of the junk….it occurred to me that I am no different.  The junk I hoard is my thoughts.  And, I am not very different than most.  I see people suffering every single day and they assign the reason to their suffering to a person or situation that has hurt them, but the truth is that what’s really causing their suffering is their thoughts.  Let go of the non self-serving thoughts and the suffering dissipates.  When the suffering is gone, there is so much room for happiness, dreams, and love.

That tiny close knit group of people that left me, they are the same people today that they were when I loved them so much.  Nothing changed.  It was merely the thoughts in my head that were causing all the pain.

If you feel pain, hurt, or sadness, I ask you this, “Why do you believe the thoughts in your head?”  When you realize that pain and suffering is a choice…..and when you realize that you are 100% responsible for controlling the thoughts in your own head, then you can begin to let go of that pile of junk you’ve surrounded yourself with.  Stop hoarding.  Life is too good and way too short.  Your dreams are waiting for you.

Be Like Zamp

Louis Zamperini – leader, fighter, survivor.  I recently had the pleasure of reading Laura Hillenbrand’s book, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption.  It is the amazing story of Louis Zamperini, a one time Olympic athlete, whose airplane went down in the Pacific ocean during World War II.  Unbelievably, Zamperini survived the crash and floated along with two other soldiers, in a life raft, surrounded by hungry sharks for more than thirty days, without food or water, but for the occasional rain shower, or bird that would land upon them.  They eventually floated to an island, but unfortunately it was enemy territory.  Louis and Phil,  the one other soldier who had survived the long  journey, were taken as Prisoners of War where for more than two years they were tortured to near death.  Louis lived to tell his story.  What can we learn from a man that looked death in the eyes and survived?  What lessons are there to be learned from the man that was beaten day in and day out and robbed of all dignity?  Want to lead, survive, and thrive, like Zamp?  Here are five lessons to Be Like Zamp:

1. Focus on What You Have, Not What You Don’t: People that get stuck in life or business tend to find themselves focusing and even obsessing over what they don’t have.  People like Zamp, focus on the little things they do have.  For example, on many occasions during Zamperini’s long imprisonment, he almost died of starvation, his weight under one hundred pounds.  Louis survived by focusing on what he DID have, and that was his memories of all the great meals his mother had cooked for him in his life.  The memories were enough to nourish him.  He could smell the kitchen, picture his mother making the meals, and could see himself eating the magnificent dinners.  It was these memories that got him through the nights of starvation.  What is important to note is Zamp’s attitude.  When focusing on the food, he was grateful for his memory.  He didn’t focus on the fact that he didn’t have the food at that time, but rather relished in the fact that he had the memory to live off of.

 2. You Can’t Lose Everything: As a Prisoner of War, the prison guards tried to steal everything from Louis, even his dignity.  He was forced to clean the latrine with his hands.  He was beaten over and over again for no reason.  Even in the living hell that was Zamperini’s life for more than two years he found solace in the fact that the guards could not take away every last stitch of human dignity.  For example, at one point, Zamperini was offered the opportunity to live in nicer living quarters with plenty of food, if only he would transmit by radio, propaganda written by the enemies.  As hungry as Louis was and as much as he’d do almost anything to not have to go back to his prison, he would not read their propaganda.  He would not read it because it was a lie and there was still a piece of him that nobody could take a way…it was his moral turpitude.  And so, Louis accepted the starvation, the beatings, and the inhumane conditions because by doing so, he wouldn’t have to give up the one little piece of himself that he still owned.

3. Don’t Give’m the Satisfaction: On your journey through life there may very well be people on your path who want to see you suffer.  For Louis Zamperini there was The Bird, a notoriously harsh man who oversaw the prison.  The Bird would go out of his way to look for Louis in order to beat him, humiliate him, and just terrorize him.  Louis accepted his fate with courage.  He would never look The Bird in the eye and would never cry or complain about the overly severe and unjust punishments.  Louis simply endured.  The one thing that The Bird wished for was to see Louis suffer, and although he witnessed Louis’ pain, never did Zamp give The Bird the pleasure of seeing him suffer.

4. Everything Can Change:   After the war ended and Louis came home to Torrance, California, the war wasn’t over in his head.  The Bird, who had made his life a living hell, had fled the POW camp and was living in hiding in Japan.  It was killing Louis to know that The Bird had gotten away with so much harm, having even killed many POWs and having left Louis plagued with nightmares and physical wounds that would prevent him from ever competing in the Olympics again.   Louis drowned himself in alcohol as he planned a way to go to Japan to personally hunt down The Bird to kill him.   His alcoholism and his obsession over The Bird prevented him from holding down work and he almost lost his wife to divorce.  Then one day Louis Zamperini listened to Reverend Billy Graham preaching from the pulpit.  Louis had heard Graham preach before, but never really listened.  His wife would beg him to listen, but Louis was cynical and had no interest in hearing about God, or happiness.  He just wanted to drink and plan his revenge.  For some reason, the words of Billy Graham reached Louis one afternoon during an event that his wife brought him too.  There’s no saying why it was that day, but it ended up being the day that changed Louis’ life forever.  He quit drinking that day.  He changed his attitude and his life because of a few words he heard coming from the preacher.  No longer did Louis seek revenge on The Bird.   Too often, when times get hard, we think that the hard times will last forever.  Zamp is an example of how quick life can change on a dime.  Your tomorrow does not have to resemble today.

5. Forgive: When you live with hatred toward others, it kills you, not them.  This is one of the most poignant lessons that the story of Louis Zamperini offers.  Louis was led to alcoholism because he was tormented by the memories of his time in captivity.   Even when he was free, he hated his captors so much that the only way he could drown them out of his head was to drink.  The memories that you store in your head can make you or break you.  Louis survived starvation by focusing his mind on his mom’s home cooked meals during captivity.  Once he realized the power of his mind, Louis knew that the only way he could banish his own torment would be to fully forgive his captors, including The Bird.  By focusing his thoughts on forgiveness, Louis was able to do what he had previously hoped the alcohol would do, release the demons in his head.  Louis understood that his mind could help him or hurt him, it was his choice.  Through forgiveness, Louis healed himself.  Today he is in his nineties, still living in California.

This is one webinar you cannot afford to miss…literally!  In this 45 minute program, we will hear from the amazing financial expert and author extraordinaire, Belinda Rosenblum, on how to create higher net worth by focusing on your self-esteem with money.  During this fast paced program, you will learn:

* The art of creating higher self-worth which will lead to higher net worth
* How to create a life of joy, pleasure, aliveness, affluence, and riches
* How to extinguish old and useless belief systems about money so those negative emotions stop flaring up whenever a financial decision needs to be made
* How the 3 A’s will make or break your financial success
* Why not tracking where your money goes is costing you hundreds or even thousands of dollars every month (and what you can do about that!)
* The new 5-word motto to overcome perfectionism
* The science of owning rather than renting your money and your life

Money–although such a useful tool–is often accompanied by avoidance, shame, and anxiety. Does it have to be that way? Absolutely not. Financial independence begins with your self-worth and builds to support your net worth, yet too many people instead base their self-worth on their net worth. It doesn’t have to be confusing and can actually be very empowering.

In this program, you’ll learn a new way to think about money and will be offered the opportunity to realize that you control your destiny when you take back control of your emotions, activities, and finances.  Once you realize the control you have over your belief about your own self-worth, you will then have the ability to steer your life toward the net worth that you desire—and make the real money you know is possible for you. Where there’s always enough and it’s never a mystery.
